The Safety of Grey: Why Most Condo Renovations in Toronto Look the Same?

When Did Grey Become Synonymous with Modern?

I recently read an article about “millennial grey,” the neutral shade that has taken over so many interiors. It made me think about how often I see this same phenomenon in condo refurbishments.

The Psychology of the Palette

At a recent presentation, we showed several design options, including selections with deliberate color. The board made up of an older demographic genuinely liked the presentation and chose to move forward with us. However, when the moment of decision arrived, the consensus was clear: “We want grey.”

  • The Modern Proxy: For this demographic, grey is the primary indicator of “modern.”

  • The Rejection of the Past: Beige is viewed as a relic of the past, synonymous with outdated builder standards.

  • The Fear of the Gamble: Color is perceived as a high-risk gamble that might alienate future residents or impact resale value.

The "Safe" Update

Grey has become the safe way to demonstrate that a space has been updated. To satisfy the board’s vision, we rendered two specific grey options—one lighter and one darker. Both were exactly what they requested; both were “modern” in their words.

But the question remains: Are we really designing for “modern,” or are we designing for a specific generation’s belief of what modern is?
